It’s embarrassing, really, but I forgot how many times I’ve went back in time.
Well, I haven’t forgotten. But the version I met did. Apparently there’s been a loop of me going back in time again and again, a new version each time, trying to improve my life in some way. And my god they have!
From what I’ve been told, I started out just on the edge of losing my house. Didn’t have a job, didn’t have a social life, didn’t have anything but a couple dollars to my name and a library card. So Version One of me (I’m calling them that to keep this easy for me) did lots of research on time.
Apparently it wasn’t that hard. They were a genius, from the stories I’ve heard. Top of their class, able to absorb new information in a snap, the works. Much smarter than I now. It took them a few years, but eventually they made a time machine. So what did they do with it? Identify a period in time when they could have changed their life and fixed it, of course!
So, they went back in time and met Version Two of me. Two was very excited to see their future self. As was One. Finally, they could repair what went wrong. I don’t remember exactly what it was, but it had something to do with finance. Some past version of me forgot the specifics. They also provided instructions on how to travel back in time.
Two followed the instructions from One, and they became rich! Even better, they stuck around with everything One gave them, including instructions on how to make time travel. So what do they do? Why, go back in time and fix the mistakes from their past, of course!
I believe this was something to do with a business idea, I don’t know exactly what. Well, it was a smash hit, and they became a billionaire more or less overnight. Still, they kept the design of their time machine secret.
They went back over and over again, gradually improving my life to what it is now. And it’s good. I’m well off, a nice group of friends, and a comfortable living. There was one part of myself that I wish I could fix: my intelligence.
Now, I bet you’re wondering: why not go back and change it? After all, that’s what ‘I’ve’ been doing. Well the thing is… um… I lost the instructions.
Look, for some reason the more and more I went back in time, the less intelligent I became. I don’t have a specific answer, but maybe it’s because I’m not pushing myself anymore? I don’t really know. I’m not that smart. And I lost the paper. Stupidly set it on fire in a back yard party.
So now I’m stuck here.
Forever.
It’s embarrassing, really.
